If you meet these criteria, you may be eligible

    Age 18 to 75 (inclusive)

  • Heart line icon with heart rate line

    History of cervical spinal cord injury

  • Heart line icon with heart rate line

    Must be at least one (1) year since spinal cord injury with impaired respiratory function (ability to breathe) caused by the injury

  • Heart line icon with heart rate line

    Must be able to attend in-person sessions at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, CA up to two (2) times per week (frequency of study visits will depend on individual circumstances)(depending on severity

Take Part in an Innovative Study on Spinal Cord Stimulation 

Findings from this study will inform physicians and scientists on further developing treatments to help patients regain breathing independence.

Up to 21 months of Experimental therapy

What do I have to do?

  • You will attend up to 21 months of therapy depending on your recovery stage

  • You're able to attend in-person sessions up to twice weekly depending on recovery stage

What is my impact?

This study focuses on the impact of spinal cord stimulation on improving impaired breathing function. Eligible study participants will undergo surgery performed by Dr. Daniel Lu (UCLA Neurosurgeon) to implant electrodes (devices that will electrically stimulate your spinal cord) in the epidural area (space between the spinal cord and the vertebra) of your neck.

What do I get?

You will receive a compensation of $250 per month after all screening procedures have been completed throughout the study, for up to 2 years.

You will receive potential rehabilitation treatments that could improve your breathing function and SCI conditions.
