You're overweight or obese

Your BMI must be ≥23 kg/m².

You consume sugary beverages regularly

Sugary beverages may include pop/soda, energy drinks, sweetened iced teas, dessert drinks, and homemade sweetened drinks

You can provide physical measuresments

You'll be asked to complete quesionnatires and donate small amounts of blood samples.

You can attend study visits in Toronto

You must reside in the Greater Toronto Area and be able to attend periodic in-person visits to the lab located in Downtown Toronto.

You don't have a soy or cow's milk intolerance/allergy

You may be randomly assigned to a soy or cow's milk beverage intervention for the study and must be able to consume it without any intolerances.

You don't have diabetes

You must not be diagnosed with Type I or Type II diabetes.

Studying Healthier Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

This study aims to assess the effect of using soy milk or cow's milk to replace sugary drinks on various health outcomes in overweight and obese individuals.

What do I have to do?

In this study, you'll be randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups to drink either soy milk, cow's milk or a pop/soda of your choice for 6 months. The study screening period & activities include:

  • 1 screening phone call prior to the start of the study

  • 1 in-person pre-study visit

  • 1 screening visit prior to the start of the study

  • 7 in-person study visits approximately once a month

What do I get?

You earn up to $350 over the course of the study. You'll be provided with 6 months' worth of your assigned beverage of either cow's milk, soy milk or pop of your choice.

Dr. John L Sievenpiper, MD, PhD, FRCPC

Dr. John Sievenpiper is a Clinician Scientist who holds appointments as a Professor in the Departments of Nutritional Sciences and Medicine and the Lifestyle Medicine Lead in the MD Program at the University of Toronto. He's a Staff Physician in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and Scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital. His recent work has been focused on improving metabolic health with plant-based food products.
